Why is my Vat ID not being accepted by the system?

SUMMARY

This article provides information about the VAT ID field and how to troubleshoot VAT-related problems that may arise during the order process.

For customers outside the EU, or EU customers who do not represent a VAT-deferred or VAT-exempt organization, the VAT ID field should be left blank or empty.  It is not a required field.

MORE INFORMATION

What Is the VAT ID field?

For orders of downloadable software placed by customers in the European Union, the EU's Value Added Tax (VAT) may be collected on the order.  All VAT collected will be remitted to the proper taxation authorities in the EU.  If you are ordering on behalf of an organization that is exempt from paying the EU's VAT (or has a VAT-deferred status), the VAT ID field of the Web Store allows you to enter your organization's VAT ID to demonstrate that exempt or deferred status.

VAT will be applied if you proceed with an order when VAT ID verification is unsuccessful. You may be able to reclaim the tax by filing for reimbursement with your local VAT authorities.

How to Troubleshoot Problems

If you receive the error message "Unable to verify VAT ID," one of the following conditions may exist:

  • The VAT ID you entered did not follow the format required for this site. Be sure to follow the format listed for your country in the table below.
  • The VAT ID you entered is invalid, or a technical problem is preventing validation. To check the validity of your VAT ID, you may use the VIES (VAT Information Exchange System) web site at http://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/vies/vieshome.do. If a technical problem is preventing validation, this check will explain the problem and suggest a solution.
